Relaxation & Mindfulness Group

Group Goal: To provide an experiential introduction to the practice of mindfulness utilizing a variety of types of meditation, daily mindfulness, and relevant metaphors and brief readings.

What is mindfulness and how can it help me? "mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non judgmentally." – Jon Kabat-Zinn. Mindfulness means being fully present with your experience of the current moment without judging your thoughts, emotions, or sensations. This is accomplished by focusing your attention through meditative and reflective practices in order to cultivate self-awareness and self-acceptance. With practice, people find that this allows them to respond to difficulties in more intentional, healthy ways. We often operate on “autopilot” which can lead to increased stress and general feelings of anxiety. In contrast, practicing mindfulness has been found to improve mood and sense of well-being, decrease anxiety, and improve concentration.

What are these “practices?” Group members will have the opportunity to try different forms of mindfulness such as: Body scan, Sitting meditation, Mindful eating, 3-Minute breathing space, Hearing meditation, and Mindful communication. You will also learn ways to bring mindfulness to everyday activities.

Format: The group will meet for eight weeks with 90 minute sessions that will include in-session teachings, discussions, and practice of multiple forms of mindfulness – as well as suggested exercises for participants to complete on their own, to support the development of regular mindfulness practices in their lives.

Come for one or all eight weeks!
