Native Americans and Cancer

According to the CDC, cancer is the second leading cause of death for Natives over age 45. Natives also have higher rates of lung, colorectal, liver, stomach, kidney, and other types of cancer compared to non-Hispanic white people in the U.S.

GLITEC’s new cancer report takes a closer look at cancer data for Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Data from this report:
Helps clarify the need for effective culturally appropriate tobacco prevention and control policies and resources
Highlights geographical variation in trends in cancer incidence and mortality that demonstrate opportunities to target public health interventions based on state-specific trends
Reinforces that efforts should be made to ensure Natives receive equal benefit from current and emerging lung cancer prevention and control interventions, as well as expansions for screening for breast, colon and rectum, lung and bronchus, and prostate cancer.
