ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR.
Josee Starr is an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes from Fort Berthold, North Dakota. She is also Omaha from Macy, NE and Odawa from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Reserve on Manitoulin Island in Ontario. She was born in Chicago, IL and raised in Northwest Indiana. She went to school in Gary, IN and grew up in the Chicago Native community as a 2nd generation urban born native. Her maternal grandparents are David and Josephine Fox, who were active members in the community. Her paternal grandparents are Phillip and Marvel Starr from North Dakota.
Josee has years of experience working with the Native community both as a facilitator of Native Programming and as a volunteer; dedicating time to serving the community. Josee has a passion for Native American arts in all forms, but appreciates the arts of song and sound the most. Josee has danced at powwows her whole life. Joseeโs mother says she has been dancing since before she could walk. She is an old style jingle dress dancer and has traveled the country and Canada, going to different communities to learn and celebrate this gift. Josee has worked as an independent artist and has a background in cultural education. She first learned to sew when she was about 7 years old, learning from her mother, family, and her community. Josee has been teaching sewing classes in the community since she was 16 years old. You can view her work here: https://www.facebook.com/StarrQuilts
