Monkeypox Health Advisory

Cases of monkeypox virus have recently been identified in Europe and the US., some, but not all cases have been identified among gay, bisexual or men who have sex with men. Anyone can get Monkeypox.

What you should know:

Since mid-May 2022, CDC and its partners have been working to prevent the spread of monkeypox in a global outbreak in the United States and many other countries without a history of monkeypox.

As of September 21, there have been 24,364 confirmed cases of probable or confirmed monkeypox in all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. While this level of monkeypox activity is unexpected, the risk to the general U.S. population remains low.

Worldwide, cases have been reported in 106 countries and territories across all continents except Antarctica. Nearly 99% of cases in this outbreak have occurred in countries that did not historically report monkeypox. The number of new monkeypox cases reported has been trending downward since late August.

Monkeypox is spread through close contact, such as touching someone’s rash and sores, sharing bedding or towels, or respiratory droplets (kissing, coughing, sneezing).

Common symptoms: Rash or unusual sores on face, body, and genitals, fever, chills, head or muscle aches, or swelling of lymph nodes.

Avoid contact (touching sores, kissing, sex) with anyone who has a rash or symptoms of Monkeypox.
